Get to Know MichiganLabs Series: Josh Hulst
October 21, 2015As part of an upcoming “Get to Know MichiganLabs” Series, we are featuring a few questions with Josh Hulst. Josh is the Co-Founder and Lead Architect at MichiganLabs. It has been said that if you were in a technology fight you would not want to meet Josh in a dark alley – unless of course he was on your side.
At MichiganLabs, Josh manages the amazing team of developers while meeting and engaging with new and existing customers. We sat down with Josh in a one-one-one interview to ask him two questions.
// Josh, thanks so much for sitting down with us. What got you originally interested in technology?
I’ve always enjoyed figuring out how things work by taking them apart. As a kid, there were multiple times when my parents came home to find the family computer disassembled on the living room floor with me always hoping I could get them back together and working.I really enjoyed math and science so software was an easy choice to fit into my engineering interest. The pace that technology changes gives me the opportunity to always be learning and playing with something new.
I’m really liking what Tesla is doing right now and would love to get to work with them on an app. The idea of being able to create a semi-autonomous car with a software update completely changes the way people think about automobiles. It’s great to see a car that started out with modern technology rather than having to update so many legacy systems. But really the biggest reason is that maybe if we made an app for them, we’d get a test car?
// Great, thanks for your time!

Quickly Prototyping a Ktor HTTP API
August 18, 2022Whether it’s needing a quick REST API for a personal project, or quickly prototyping a mockup for a client, I like to look for web server frameworks that help me get up and running with minimal configuration and are easy to use. I recently converted a personal project’s API from an Express web server to a Ktor web server and it felt like a breeze. I’ll share below an example of what I found and how easy it is to get a Ktor server up and running.
